A Two-Day
Workshop was organized by the Department
of English, The Islamia University of Bahawalpur
on TESL (Teaching of English as a Second
Language) from 30th June 2008 - 1st July
2008. The workshop aimed to enlighten the
teachers, regarding the significance of
teaching strategies and curriculum designing
in a non-native perspective and to create
a deeper understanding of the challenges
faced by the second language teachers. Another
focus of this workshop was to help the future
teachers, to observe and design the creative
and practical ESL lesson plans, taking into
account linguistics, cultural and educational
backgrounds of the students.
The workshop was conducted
by two resource persons, Dr. Liz England
and Dr. Richard Boyum. Dr. Boyum is a Regional
Language Officer for the US Embassy and
is currently working for the office of the
English Language Programmes of the Bureau
of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the
US State Department. Dr. Boyum's major interest
lies in the field of TEFL (Teaching of English
as a Foreign Language) and TESOL (Teaching
of English as a Second Language). He has
also been organizing several conferences
and workshops and has been sponsoring English
Language fellows at different universities
and training centres in a number of Asian
Countries. Dr. Liz. England is an academic
specialist for the English Language Programmes
Office, US State Department. Dr. England
has worked with hundreds of teachers in
various countries. She is involved in pre
and in-service teacher education and training
in TESL and TEFL.
Dr. Boyum and Dr. Liz introduced
a wide range of current approaches, methods
and techniques for Teaching of English as
a Second Language in a variety of contexts
by involving the participants fully through
interactive techniques. The workshop helped
the teachers to get acquainted with the
techniques of class room management and
the exploitation of resources and was beneficial
for the teachers to understand the cultural
and motivational background of the learners
of English as a Second Language.
