The MSc Physics classes were started in 1977. Since then the department is imparting quality education. As a result, a large number of students have been absorbed in many public and private organizations throughout Pakistan and abroad.
The department has a highly qualified foreign trained faculty comprising nine PhDs and three MPhils. All the teachers are fully committed to impart research based knowledge at higher level. MPhil classes were started in the year 2002 and MSc Physics (Evening) in 2003. Thirty three PhD scholars are continuing their PhD studies in various fields like Material Physics, Medical Physics, Semiconductor Physics, Thin Films and Plasma Physics.
Experimental labs with sophisticated equipment including high speed computer Sun Blade 2500, Mini Film XRD, Thin Film Coating Unit, DLS-83D Deep level Spectrometer, 6487-Kietley Pico Ammeter and 7200 Boonton Capacitance Meter is specialty of this department. Recently high resolution Scanning Electron, S-3000H, is added in the Centralized Instrument Laboratory of the faculty of science for providing research facilities to the scholars of the physics department.
Medical Physics Research Group has also been working since 1998. Many graduates after completing their medical physics research under the supervision of highly skilled and qualified staff are serving in different hospitals, research organizations and universities as health physicist, medical physicist and senior scientific officers.
The Medical Physics Research Group has established a strong collaboration with national (Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Center Lahore, Bahawalpur Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Oncology, Bahawal Victoria Hospital Bahawalpur, Aga Khan University Hospital Karachi, Dow University of Health Sciences Karachi) and International (University College London, University College London Hospital UK, Nine wells Hospital, University of Dundee, UK and McGill University, Canada) research organizations.
PhD Scholars regularly visit these institutions for some of their experimental part of research work and utilize the diversity of the instruments available there. Recently 4 PhDs have completed in the medical research group and 6 more are in the process of completion. About 40 Scholars have completed MPhil in this field. A number of quality research articles are being published every year in the reputed journals. Material Physics group offers PhD level research in Defect Structures studies using Molecular Dynamics techniques. Semiconductor physics group is offering research facilities for MSc/MPhil/PhD studies in the areas of Interfacial states at metal-insulator semiconductor interfaces, deep electronic states in group III-V semiconductor interfaces and preparation and characterization of (II-VI) Solar Cells.
A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between Linkoping University Linkoping, Sweden and the Islamia University of Bahawalpur in 2005 for a period of five years. Under this agreement, the two institutions will exchange their research scholars and faculty members.
