A delegation of faculty members from the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment, the Islamia University of Bahawalpur participated in a two-day specialized training workshop titled Spiraling Whitefly Knowledge, Communication and Capacity-Building Training, hosted by Centre for Agriculture and Biosciences International (CABI) at the Ramada Hotel, Islamabad. The training was organized under Centre for Agriculture and Biosciences International’s PlantwisePlus programme led by Centre for Agriculture and Biosciences International Country Coordinator Dr. Muhammad Naeem Aslam, with the objective of Strengthening National Knowledge, Technical Capacity, Communication and Coordination for the Identification, Surveillance and Management of spiralling whitefly, an invasive insect pest that may pose a serious threat to agricultural crops, horticultural plants and other economically important host species in Pakistan. The workshop brought together experts, researchers, academicians, plant protection professionals, agricultural extension specialists and media representatives from leading organizations across Pakistan. Participants included delegates from the University of Agriculture Faisalabad, Muhammad Nawaz Shareef University of Agriculture Multan, Sindh Agriculture University Tandojam, Pir Mehr Ali Shah Agriculture University Rawalpindi, Nuclear Institute for Agriculture and Biology (NIAB), Agriculture Extension Department Punjab, Plant Protection Department Punjab, and the Federal Department of Plant Protection. The delegation from the Federal Department of Plant Protection was led by its Director General. Media personnel also participated in the training to strengthen communication and public awareness regarding emerging plant-health threats. The Islamia University of Bahawalpur was represented by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Naveed Aslam Malghani, Chairman, Department of Plant Pathology and Director Advanced Studies and Research, Dr. Taimoor Shakeel, Assistant Professor, Department of Plant Pathology, Dr. Asif Sajjad, Associate Professor, Department of Entomology and Dr. Adnan Bukhari, Associate Professor, Department of Agronomy. During the training, experts highlighted the importance of early identification, monitoring, surveillance, effective communication and coordinated management strategies for spiralling whitefly. Particular emphasis was placed on strengthening the capacity of researchers, extension professionals and plant-protection personnel so that potential outbreaks can be detected and managed before the pest becomes widely established in agricultural production systems. Centre for Agriculture and Biosciences International Development Communication Manager Asia Dr. Azmat Abbas, provided insight into risk communication strategy for the pre-outbreak phase and guided the sessions on addressing communication challenges, message development, rumor and misinformation management and designing interventions for various stakeholders, including farmers, nursery operators, plant importers and other stakeholders to ensure early detection and reporting, without creating unnecessary scare, if the pest is identified in Pakistan. The participants discussed the potential risks associated with invasive whiteflies because of their ability to infest a wide range of host plants and spread into new production environments. The training also emphasized the importance of integrated pest management, biological control, responsible pesticide use, regular field surveillance and rapid information sharing among universities, research organizations and government plant-protection agencies. The participation of the Islamia University of Bahawalpur scientists provided an important opportunity to strengthen institutional linkages with Centre for Agriculture and Biosciences International and other national stakeholders working in plant health, entomology, plant pathology and crop protection. The multidisciplinary composition of the Islamia University of Bahawalpur delegation, representing plant pathology, entomology and agronomy, also reflected the importance of an integrated approach to addressing emerging agricultural pest threats. The faculty members appreciated Centre for Agriculture and Biosciences International and the Plant-wise Plus programme for bringing together key stakeholders from across Pakistan on a common platform and for providing technical training on an emerging plant-health concern. They emphasized that collaborative research, surveillance, capacity building and effective communication between universities, government departments and international organizations would be essential for protecting Pakistan’s agricultural production from invasive pests such as spiralling whitefly. The participation of the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment, The Islamia University of Bahawalpur, in the workshop further demonstrates the university’s commitment to research, capacity development and collaboration for sustainable agriculture and plant-health protection in Pakistan.
