A one-day national webinar, organized by the Department of Fiqh and Shariah at The Islamia University of Bahawalpur, was held on the topic: "Islamic Etiquette of Disagreement in the Context of Contemporary Social, Political, and Religious Divisions." During the event, scholars emphasized Islamic principles regarding disagreement, the importance of dialogue, intellectual tolerance, and the promotion of social harmony. The webinar, held in the Audio-Video Conference Room of the Khwaja Ghulam Farid Auditorium at the Baghdad-ul-Jadeed Campus, was presided over by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Kamran, with the patronage of the Dean of the Faculty of Islamic and Arabic Studies, Prof. Dr. Sheikh Shafiq-ur-Rehman. Prof. Dr. Hafiz Abdul Basit Khan, from the Sheikh Zayed Islamic Centre at the University of the Punjab, Lahore, served as the keynote speaker. In his welcome address, Dr. Muhammad Saeed Sheikh, Chairman of the Department of Fiqh and Shariah, stated that disagreement is a manifestation of the maturity of human thought, intellectual evolution, and academic growth. However, he noted that deviating from Islamic etiquette transforms it from a positive and constructive process into a source of conflict and animosity. He remarked that in healthy societies, disagreement opens new avenues for knowledge and research; unfortunately, in our society, it often devolves into opposition, contentious debate, and mutual tension. Given the current social, political, and religious divisions, raising awareness of the Islamic etiquette of disagreement—and adhering to these principles in practice is a pressing need of the hour. In his scholarly address, the keynote speaker, Prof. Dr. Hafiz Abdul Basit Khan, provided an in-depth analysis of the nature of disagreement, relevant fundamental terminology, the causes and consequences of such differences, and their potential positive outcomes. Drawing upon numerous examples from the Seerah (the life of the Prophet PBUH), he illustrated that while Islam allows for differences of opinion, it also establishes ethical boundaries and principles for such discourse. He emphasized that, according to Islamic teachings, intellectual disagreement should be conducted with mutual respect, reasoned argument, moderation, and courteous language. The participants highly appreciated his scholarly and well-reasoned address. In his remarks, Professor Dr. Sheikh Shafiq-ur-Rehman, Dean of the Faculty of Islamic and Arabic Studies, thanked the guest speaker and noted that maintaining civil conduct, mutual respect, and tolerance even amidst differences of opinion is a fundamental requirement of a civilized society. He highlighted the importance of such academic activities in fostering social harmony. Delivering the concluding presidential address, Professor Dr. Muhammad Kamran, Vice-Chancellor of The Islamia University of Bahawalpur, commended the organization of this national webinar on such a significant and contemporary topic, and lauded the academic and research endeavors of the Department of Fiqh and Shariah. He remarked that the role of universities is not limited merely to teaching; rather, it is also their responsibility to promote positive intellectual attitudes, tolerance, and scholarly dialogue within society. They emphasized the need to organize webinars, seminars, and training workshops on topics of contemporary relevance in the future as well. Khuzeema Ahmed, a student of the department, served as the moderator.
