Dr. Muhammad Saleem, a professor of applied psychology at IUB, gave the remarks on World Autism Awareness Day 2026.

On the occasion of World Autism Awareness Day, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Saleem, Chairman, Department of Applied Psychology, The Islamia University of Bahawalpur, emphasized the urgent need to foster awareness, acceptance, and evidence-based support systems for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder across Pakistan. Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects communication, behavior, and social interaction, with varying levels of strengths and challenges. Dr. Saleem highlighted that early identification, structured intervention, and inclusive educational practices are critical for enabling individuals with autism to reach their full potential. Prof. Dr. Saleem said that awareness is not merely about recognition; it is about responsibility. As a society, we must move beyond stereotypes and build systems that are inclusive, compassionate, and scientifically informed. He further stressed the importance of strengthening institutional capacity for diagnosis and intervention, Training educators and mental health professionals in autism-specific strategies, Promoting inclusive education policies within universities and schools, Supporting families through counseling and community-based services. The Department of Applied Psychology at IUB remains committed to advancing research, professional training, and community outreach in the domain of developmental and clinical psychology. The department actively contributes to building indigenous frameworks that address local cultural and social dynamics in mental health care. Dr. Saleem also called upon policymakers, healthcare providers, educators, and civil society to collaborate in creating an enabling environment where neurodiversity is respected and supported. “Let us reaffirm our commitment to inclusion, dignity, and equal opportunities for all individuals, regardless of neurological differences,” he concluded.

عالمی یومِ آگاہی برائے آٹزم کے موقع پر پروفیسر ڈاکٹر محمد سلیم، چیئرمین، شعبہ اطلاقی نفسیات، اسلامیہ یونیورسٹی بہاولپور نے اس امر پر زور دیا کہ پاکستان میں آٹزم اسپیکٹرم ڈس آرڈر کے حامل افراد کے لیے مؤثر آگاہی، سماجی قبولیت اور سائنسی بنیادوں پر معاون نظام کی اشد ضرورت ہے۔ آٹزم ایک اعصابی و نشوونمائی کیفیت ہے جو ابلاغ، رویّے اور سماجی تعامل کو مختلف انداز سے متاثر کرتی ہے۔ ڈاکٹر سلیم نے اس بات پر روشنی ڈالی کہ بروقت تشخیص، منظم مداخلت، اور جامع تعلیمی نظام ایسے افراد کو اپنی مکمل صلاحیتوں کے اظہار کے قابل بنانے میں کلیدی کردار ادا کرتے ہیں۔انہوں نے کہا کہ آگاہی صرف پہچان کا نام نہیں بلکہ ذمہ داری کا تقاضا بھی کرتی ہے۔ ہمیں بطور معاشرہ دقیانوسی تصورات سے نکل کر ایسے نظام تشکیل دینے ہوں گے جو شمولیتی، ہمدردانہ اور سائنسی بنیادوں پر استوار ہوں۔انہوں نے مزیدکہا کہ تشخیص اور مداخلت کے ادارہ جاتی نظام کو مضبوط بنانا، اساتذہ اور ذہنی صحت کے ماہرین کی آٹزم سے متعلق تربیت، تعلیمی اداروں میں شمولیتی پالیسیوں کا فروغ،خاندانوں کے لیے مشاورتی اور کمیونٹی سطح پر معاون خدمات کی فراہمی ضروری ہے۔ شعبہ اطلاقی نفسیات، اسلامیہ یونیورسٹی بہاولپور، تحقیق، پیشہ ورانہ تربیت اور کمیونٹی آگاہی کے ذریعے ترقیاتی و کلینیکل نفسیات کے میدان میں اپنی خدمات جاری رکھے ہوئے ہے، اور مقامی سماجی و ثقافتی تناظر میں ذہنی صحت کے مسائل کے حل کے لیے مؤثر فریم ورک تیار کر رہا ہے۔ ڈاکٹر سلیم نے پالیسی سازوں، ماہرینِ صحت، اساتذہ اور سماجی اداروں سے اپیل کی کہ وہ مل کر ایسا ماحول تشکیل دیں جہاں اعصابی تنوع (Neurodiversity) کو تسلیم کیا جائے اور ہر فرد کو باوقار اور مساوی مواقع فراہم کیے جائیں۔ آئیے ہم سب مل کر ایک ایسے معاشرے کے قیام کے لیے عزم کریں جہاں ہر فرد کو عزت، شمولیت اور برابری کے مواقع میسر ہوں، چاہے اس کی اعصابی کیفیت کچھ بھی ہو۔
