IUB organized a seminar on the Introduction of Lupin crop in the arid regions of Cholistan Desert

The Cholistan Institute of Desert Studies (CIDS) organized a seminar on the Introduction of Lupin crop in the arid regions of Cholistan Desert, Pakistan funded by ALP PARC. The event brought together a diverse group of researchers, collaborators and students, including the CIDS research team, Prof. Dr. Tanveer Hussain Turabi, Dean Faculty of the Agriculture & Environment, Dr. Malik Muhammad Yousaf  Sr. Director, Arid Zone Research Institute, PARC, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Atif Director ORIC,  Prof. Dr. Asif Naveed Ranjha Director ASRB, Mr. Mudassar Hussain President Olive Foundation Punjab, Mr. Naeem M. Chuhan Climate Change Expert United Kingdom, Dr. Muhammad Afzal CSO ASARI, M. Madni Afzal Representative Growtech Services, Gulraiz Khan Coordinator WWF-Pakistan, Mr. Amir Manzoor Additional Director Farms exclusively graced this event. In addition to these number of faculty members, undergraduate and postgraduate students also participated in the seminar.

Dr. Muhammad Zahid Ihsan, Lupin Project's Principal Investigator, and Dr. Naeem Tahir gave a briefing on the advantages of lupin crops, which are known for their capacity to fix nitrogen, withstand drought, and offer good protein source. They share the knowledge of most effective methods for cultivating and harvesting lupin crops, as well as opportunities and problems related to arid areas of Cholistan Desert.

CIDS research team was commended by Prof. Dr. Tanvir Hussain Turabi, Dr. Malik Muhammad Yousaf for directing their research toward deliverable objectives and community services. At the end Director CIDS Dr. Muhammad Abdullah briefed that CIDS is committed to promote sustainable desert agriculture and providing the technical advisory for farmers and support to policy makers to meet the challenges of food security especially in the Arid Zone of Pakistan.

چولستان انسٹی ٹیوٹ آف ڈیزرٹ اسٹڈیز (CIDS) نے ALP PARC کے تعاون سے صحرائے چولستان کے بنجر علاقوں میں لوپین کی فصل کی کاشت پر ایک سیمینار کا انعقاد کیا گیا۔ اس تقریب میں پروفیسر ڈاکٹر تنویر حسین ترابی، ڈین فیکلٹی آف ایگریکلچر اینڈ انوائرمنٹ، ڈاکٹر ملک محمد یوسف سینئر ڈائریکٹر، ایرڈ زون ریسرچ انسٹی ٹیوٹ پاکستان ایگریکلچر ریسرچ کونسل شامل تھے۔ پروفیسر ڈاکٹر محمد عاطف ڈائریکٹر ORIC، پروفیسر ڈاکٹر آصف نوید رانجھا ڈائریکٹر ASRB، مدثر حسین صدر اولیو فاؤنڈیشن پنجاب، نعیم ایم چوہان موسمیاتی تبدیلی کے ماہر برطانیہ، ڈاکٹر محمد افضل CSO ASARI M مدنی افضل نمائندہ Growtech Services، گلریز خان کوآرڈینیٹر WWF-Pakistan، جناب عامر منظور ایڈیشنل ڈائریکٹر فارمز نے خصوصی طور پر شرکت کی اور فیکلٹی ممبران کی تعداد کے علاوہ انڈر گریجویٹ اور پوسٹ گریجویٹ طلباء نے بھی شرکت کی۔ ڈاکٹر محمد زاہد احسان، لوپین پراجیکٹ کے پرنسپل انویسٹی گیٹر، اور ڈاکٹر نعیم طاہر نے لیوپین کی فصلوں کے فوائد کے بارے میں بریفنگ دی جو نائٹروجن کو ٹھیک کرنے، خشک سالی کا مقابلہ کرنے اور پروٹین کا اچھا ذریعہ پیش کرنے کی صلاحیت کے لیے مشہور ہیں۔ انہوں نے لیوپین کی فصلوں کی کاشت اور کٹائی کے مؤثر طریقوں کے ساتھ ساتھ صحرائے چولستان کے بنجر علاقوں سے متعلق مواقع اور مسائل کے بارے میں معلومات بھی فراہم کیں۔ ڈائریکٹر چولستان انسٹی ٹیوٹ آف ڈیزرٹ سٹڈیز ڈاکٹر محمد عبداللہ نے بریفنگ دی کہ چولستان انسٹی ٹیوٹ آف ڈیزرٹ سٹڈیز پائیدار صحرائی زراعت کو فروغ دینے اور کسانوں کو تکنیکی مشاورت فراہم کرنے اور خاص طور پر پاکستان کے ایرڈ زون میں غذائی تحفظ کے چیلنجوں سے نمٹنے کے لیے پالیسی سازوں کو مدد فراہم کرنے کے لیے پرعزم ہے۔
