To examine ongoing cotton research trials, a group of IUB agriculturalists visited Chappu, Bahawalpur.

In line with the vision of Prof. Dr. Muhammad Kamran, Vice Chancellor, The Islamia University of Bahawalpur, to strengthen agricultural research and promote innovation in cotton improvement, a team from the National Cotton Breeding Institute (NCBI) and the Department of Plant Breeding & Genetics visited the Agricultural Research and Facilitation Complex (ARFC), Chappu, Bahawalpur to inspect ongoing cotton research trials. The delegation was led by Dr. Usman Aziz, Director, National Cotton Breeding Institute, accompanied by Dr. Abdul Rehman, Senior Scientist/Lecturer, Department of Plant Breeding & Genetics, and Dr. Iftikhar Ali, Lecturer, Department of Plant Breeding & Genetics. During the visit, the team conducted a detailed inspection of the ongoing adaptability and performance trials of promising cotton genotypes including IUB-MK, IUB-Green, and IUB-Shahkar. The delegation assessed plant growth, boll setting, crop vigor, field performance, and overall adaptability under local agro-climatic conditions. These trials are being conducted to evaluate the yield potential, stability, and suitability of the varieties across different environments before their large-scale recommendation to farmers. Ms. Hadiqa, Research officer at the Chappu Research station provided a comprehensive briefing on the experimental layout, crop management practices, current crop status, data collection procedures, and preliminary observations from the trials. The visiting team appreciated the dedication and efforts of the research staff involved in managing and monitoring the experiments. Speaking on the occasion, the IUB team emphasized that multi-location adaptability trials are essential for accurately assessing the performance of new cotton varieties under diverse environmental and management conditions. They highlighted the importance of maintaining high-quality data on agronomic traits, yield components, fiber quality, and stress tolerance to support future variety registration and commercialization. Dr. Usman Aziz stated that the National Cotton Breeding Institute is actively working on the development of high yielding, climate-resilient, and superior fiber quality cotton varieties through modern breeding approaches and rigorous field evaluations. He added that the institute remains committed to providing innovative and farmer friendly technologies that contribute to increased cotton in productivity, improved farmer livelihoods, and the sustainable growth of Pakistan’s cotton sector. The delegation also directed the research team to ensure timely recording of all experimental observations and to continue strengthening research efforts aimed at developing next generation cotton varieties capable of meeting the challenges of changing climatic conditions and the evolving needs of the textile industry. The visit concluded with a reaffirmation of the commitment of The Islamia University of Bahawalpur, the National Cotton Breeding Institute, and the Department of Plant Breeding & Genetics to advancing cotton research and supporting the revival and sustainability of Pakistan’s cotton economy.

وائس چانسلراسلامیہ یونیورسٹی بہاولپور پروفیسر ڈاکٹر محمد کامران کے وژن کے مطابق زرعی تحقیق کو جدید خطوط پر استوار کرنے اور کپاس کی پیداوار میں اضافہ یقینی بنانے کے سلسلے میں نیشنل کاٹن بریڈنگ انسٹی ٹیوٹ اور ڈیپارٹمنٹ آف پلانٹ بریڈنگ اینڈ جینیٹکس کی تحقیقی ٹیم نے زرعی تحقیقاتی و سہولتی کمپلیکس چاپو، بہاولپور کا دورہ کیا۔ وفد کی قیادت ڈاکٹر عثمان عزیز ڈائریکٹر نیشنل کاٹن بریڈنگ انسٹی ٹیوٹ نے کی، جبکہ ان کے ہمراہ ڈاکٹر عبدالرحمن سینئر سائنسدان / لیکچرار، شعبہ پلانٹ بریڈنگ اینڈ جینیٹکس اور ڈاکٹر افتخار علی لیکچرار، شعبہ پلانٹ بریڈنگ اینڈ جینیٹکس بھی موجود تھے۔دورے کے دوران وفد نے ادارے کی نئی اور امید افزا کپاس کی اقسام IUB MK، IUB Green اور IUB Shahkar کے جاری Adaptability (Multi-location) Trials کا تفصیلی معائنہ کیا۔ ان اقسام کی بڑھوتری، بول سیٹنگ، پودوں کی صحت، برداشت کی صلاحیت اور مجموعی کارکردگی کا جائزہ لیا گیا۔ ان آزمائشوں کا مقصد مختلف موسمی اور زمینی حالات میں ان اقسام کی حقیقی صلاحیت کا سائنسی بنیادوں پر تعین کرنا ہے تاکہ مستقبل میں کسانوں کو زیادہ پیداواری اور معیاری اقسام فراہم کی جاسکیں۔ اس موقع پر محترمہ ہدیقہ نے وفد کو جاری تحقیقی تجربات، آزمائشی ڈیزائن، فصل کی موجودہ صورتحال، زرعی نظم و نسق، ابتدائی نتائج اور مختلف تحقیقی مشاہدات کے حوالے سے جامع بریفنگ دی۔ وفد نے تحقیقاتی پلاٹس کا بغور جائزہ لیا اور تحقیقاتی ٹیم کی محنت، پیشہ ورانہ صلاحیت اور سائنسی اندازِ تحقیق کو سراہا۔ وفد نے اس بات پر زور دیا کہ کثیرالمقامی آزمائشیں کسی بھی نئی قسم کی منظوری اور کامیاب تجارتی کاشت کے لیے بنیادی حیثیت رکھتی ہیں، کیونکہ انہی آزمائشوں کے ذریعے مختلف علاقوں میں فصل کی کارکردگی، پیداوار، فائبر کوالٹی اور موسمی حالات سے مطابقت کا درست اندازہ لگایا جاتا ہے۔ اس موقع پر ہدایت کی گئی کہ تمام زرعی و تحقیقی مشاہدات، پیداوار، فائبر خصوصیات اور دیگر اہم ڈیٹا کو سائنسی معیار کے مطابق بروقت ریکارڈ کیا جائے تاکہ مستقبل کی تحقیق اور اقسام کی رجسٹریشن میں معاونت حاصل ہو۔ڈاکٹر عثمان عزیز نے کہا کہ نیشنل کاٹن بریڈنگ انسٹی ٹیوٹ جدید بریڈنگ، بائیوٹیکنالوجی اور کثیرالمقامی آزمائشوں کے ذریعے ایسی کپاس کی اقسام تیار کرنے کے لیے سرگرم عمل ہے جو زیادہ پیداوار، بہتر فائبر معیار، بیماریوں اور ماحولیاتی دباؤ کے خلاف بہتر برداشت کی حامل ہوں۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ ادارہ کسانوں کو جدید اور پائیدار ٹیکنالوجی کی فراہمی کے ذریعے قومی کپاس کی پیداوار میں اضافے اور ملکی معیشت کو مضبوط بنانے کے لیے اپنا کردار ادا کرتا رہے گا۔ آخر میں وفد نے تحقیقاتی ٹیم کو جاری تجربات کو مزید مؤثر انداز میں مکمل کرنے، ڈیٹا کے معیار کو یقینی بنانے اور ایسی جدید کپاس کی اقسام کی تیاری پر توجہ مرکوز رکھنے کی ہدایت کی جو مستقبل میں پاکستان کے کاشتکاروں کی ضروریات پوری کرنے کے ساتھ ساتھ ملکی ٹیکسٹائل صنعت کی ترقی میں بھی اہم کردار ادا کرسکیں۔
