Department of Geography and Geoinformatics

Introduction

Department of Geography was established in 1985 at the Islamia University of Bahawalpur, serving as a pioneer in spatial sciences in South Punjab. Since its inception, the department has steadily evolved into a hub of academic excellence, producing graduates who serve in key positions in industry and academia. The prominent serving departments include Geological Survey of Pakistan, Pakistan Meteorological Department, the Bureau of Statistics, Urban Unit, Multinational companies, Pakistan Agricultural Research Council, Punjab Urban Land System Enhancement, Multinational companies, and numerous educational and research institutions. With recent advancements in geospatial and satellite data applications, the department has evolved into the Department of Geography and Geoinformatics, leveraging specialized expertise in Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to meet emerging academic and industry needs. Currently, department is offering a range of academic programs, including ADP in Geography, BS Geography, BS in GIS and Remote Sensing, MPhil, and PhD in Geography.

 

Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Geography and Geoinformatics is to advance knowledge and innovation in spatial sciences by integrating geographic theory, geospatial technologies, and cutting-edge tools such as Remote Sensing, GIS, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning (ML). Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Sher Muhammad Malik, the department emphasizes innovative and practical oriented research to meet academic, research, and industrial demands. Highly qualified faculty of the department is actively engaged in fostering national and international collaborations, teaching credentials with impactful research, guiding students to explore and address complex issues of urbanization, climate change, disaster management, sustainable development, and spatial data analysis. With academic and research excellence, the department is meeting global standards and addressing the evolving demands of geospatial science within a multidisciplinary framework.
