Delegation from UN Women Pakistan Visits IUB to Strengthen Women Empowerment Initiatives

The The Islamia University of Bahawalpur had the honor of hosting a distinguished delegation comprising representatives from UN Women Pakistan, the Royal Norwegian Embassy, and Kaarvan Crafts Foundation. The visit aimed to strengthen collaboration between academia, industry, and community stakeholders, with a special focus on women’s empowerment and entrepreneurship in South Punjab. The visiting delegation included Ms. Anja Benedicte Myrtveit, Second Secretary at the Royal Norwegian Embassy, Mr. Munazza Azad, Program Officer at UN Women Pakistan and Mr. Danish Jabbar, CEO of Kaarvan Crafts Foundation. The Islamia University of Bahawalpur delegation was led by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Kamran, Vice Chancellor, and included Dr. Muhammad Faheem Mushtaq, Program Focal Person/Chairperson, Department of Data Science, Prof. Dr. Dost Muhammad Khan, Dean, Faculty of Computing, Prof. Dr. Robina Bhatti, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences; Prof. Dr. Areeba Khan, Director, Centre of Prevention Harassment and Discrimination & Chairperson Anti-Harassment Committee, Prof. Dr. Salman Bin Naeem, Additional Director Centre of Prevention Harassment and Discrimination, Dr. Amjad Saeed, Director, Business Incubation Centre, Dr. Sarfraz Batool, Director, Women Development Centre, Dr. Abid Shahzad, Director, International Linkages, Dr. Saeed Sheikh, Chairperson, Fiqh and Shariah, Dr. Humaira Arshad, Ex-Chairperson, Department of Computer Science, and Data Science Faculty Members including Dr. Urooj Akram, Sohail Sajid, Junaid Zaffar, Altaf Ahmad. During the session, the Department of Data Science at the Islamia University of Bahawalpur highlighted its ongoing commitment to empowering rural women through innovative, technology-driven initiatives. In collaboration with Kaarvan Crafts Foundation, the department has successfully conducted specialized training programs in digital finance, market-based digital literacy, e-commerce, and AI for business applications. These initiatives aim to enhance women’s participation in the digital economy and enable them to transform traditional skills into sustainable income-generating ventures. A key highlight of the briefing was the Mini MBA program tailored for women entrepreneurs, focusing on business development, financial management, and strategic decision-making. Additionally, the Islamia University of Bahawalpur has organized multiple engagement sessions featuring experts from private sector companies, technology startups, incubation centers, and innovation hubs, providing practical exposure, mentorship, and networking opportunities to rural women. The delegation was also briefed on the Letter of Agreement signed between the Islamia University of Bahawalpur and Kaarvan Crafts Foundation. The agreement establishes a collaborative framework to strengthen academia–industry–community linkages and promotes joint initiatives in digital skills, entrepreneurship development, research collaboration, and innovation support for women, particularly from underserved and rural areas. The discussion emphasized the significant potential of women entrepreneurs in South Punjab, while also addressing key challenges such as limited access to markets and digital platforms, lack of business training, financial exclusion, and socio-cultural constraints. Participants agreed that these challenges can be effectively addressed through digital enablement, policy support, and academic engagement. Highlighting the role of academia, the Islamia University of Bahawalpur reaffirmed its commitment to capacity building, data-driven research, innovation, and incubation support. The university is actively working to establish dedicated platforms that foster sustainable growth and innovation. As part of future collaboration, an initiative, “Skill Development Training Program” was proposed. The initiative aims to provide advanced training in digital skills, develop online marketplaces, offer business mentorship, and implement data-driven decision-making systems.  The university also highlighted the critical role of international partners in ensuring sustainability and scalability. In this regard, support was requested for pilot projects, including the establishment of IT training labs and provision of financial incentives for trainers and trainees, particularly targeting rural communities. Collaboration with UN Women and the Royal Norwegian Embassy is expected to bring valuable technical expertise, policy guidance, and global best practices. The visit concluded with a shared commitment to advancing women’s empowerment through strategic partnerships, innovation, and inclusive development initiatives in South Punjab.
