Inauguration of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence at the Islamia University of Bahawalpur

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign by UN Women, drawing the attention of Women's rights activists across the world starting on 25 November, The International Day for The Elimination of Violence against Women runs till 10 December, Human Rights Day. In the year 2023, the theme of this campaign is "Unite! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls". Following the theme of this said International campaign, the Department of Gender Studies, School of State Sciences IUB arranged an opening ceremony at the main entrance of the Faculty of Arts Building. Dean Faculty of Social Sciences Prof. Dr. Rubina Bhatti inaugurated it along with Prof. Dr. Yasmeen Roofi, Director Usman Buzdar School of State Sciences. Both of them graced this occasion along with the senior faculty members of the Department of Gender Studies and Political Science. All the students of these departments participated in this session with great zeal and zest with the projection of slogans against Gender-Based Violence written on Charts in their hands. Mr. Ansar Abbas, Assistant Professor Department of Gender Studies demonstrated this event by highlighting the importance and theme of these 16 days of activism against gender-based violence and shared the series of activities including an Awareness walk and awareness campaign of gender sensitization against Gender-Based Violence in IUB main campus and colleges of Bahawalpur. Prof. Dr. Yasmeen Roofi in her address said that gender-based violence is globally a serious issue, especially in our society. It is not only physical violence rather it has many versions like social, psychological, and mental abuse. It can be eradicated by making society gender-sensitized about gender-based violence. Prof. Dr. Rubina Bhatti conversed about the impacts of violence on the lives of women, she said we should not only end physical violence but also all types of violence against women, genders of all ages and types. Further, she said that State Policies and political will can be very helpful in ending this heinous crime in our society through the proper implementation of laws against Gender-Based violence. She said that violence should be reported and the abusers should be highlighted to make them ashamed of this shameful activity. She appreciated the efforts of Faculty Members of the Department of Gender Studies Mr. Ansar Abbas, Mr. Hasnaat Ahmad, Dr. Shahzad Mahmood, and Mr. Sibtain Yasir. Mr. Ansar Abbas paid a vote of thanks to the participants, he was very grateful to the students and Faculty Members of the Department of Political Science and Gender Studies especially respected Prof. Dr. Rubina Bhatti, Dean Faculty of Social Sciences who made this event very graceful and valuable by their existence.

صنفی بنیادوں پر تشدد کے خلاف 16 دن کی سرگرمیاں یونائیٹڈ نیشن ویمن کی ایک سالانہ بین الاقوامی مہم کا حصہ ہے، جو 25 نومبر سے شروع ہونے والی دنیا بھر میں خواتین کے حقوق کے کارکنوں کی توجہ مبذول کراتی ہے۔خواتین کے خلاف تشدد کے خاتمے کا عالمی دن 10 دسمبر، انسانی حقوق کے دن تک جاری رہتا ہے۔ امسال اس مہم کا تھیم 'متحد ہو جائیں، خواتین اور لڑکیوں کے خلاف تشدد کو روکنے کے لیے سرمایہ کاری کری'۔ اس بین الاقوامی مہم کے موضوع پر ڈیپارٹمنٹ آف جینڈر اسٹڈیز، سکول آف سٹیٹ سائنسز اسلامیہ یونیورسٹی بہاولپور نے فیکلٹی آف آرٹس بلڈنگ کے مرکزی دروازے پر ایک افتتاحی تقریب کا اہتمام کیا۔ ڈین فیکلٹی آف سوشل سائنسز پروفیسر ڈاکٹر روبینہ بھٹی نے پروفیسر ڈاکٹر یاسمین روفی، ڈائریکٹر سکول آف سٹیٹ سائنسز کے ہمراہ اس کا افتتاح کیا۔ اس موقع پر ڈیپارٹمنٹ آف جینڈر اسٹڈیز اور پولیٹیکل سائنس کے سینئر فیکلٹی ممبران نے شرکت کی۔ ان شعبہ جات کے تمام طلباء نے اپنے ہاتھوں میں چارٹوں پر صنفی بنیاد پر تشدد کے خلاف نعروں کے پروجیکشن کے ساتھ بڑے جوش و خروش کے ساتھ اس سیشن میں حصہ لیا۔ پروفیسر ڈاکٹر روبینہ بھٹی نے خواتین کی زندگیوں پر تشدد کے اثرات کے بارے میں بات کی، انہوں نے کہا کہ ہمیں نہ صرف جسمانی تشدد بلکہ خواتین کے خلاف ہر قسم کے تشدد، ہر عمر اور ہر قسم کے جنس کو ختم کرنا چاہیے۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ ریاستی پالیسیاں اور سیاسی عزم صنفی بنیاد پر تشدد کے خلاف قوانین کے مناسب نفاذ کے ذریعے ہمارے معاشرے میں اس گھناؤنے جرم کو ختم کرنے میں بہت مددگار ثابت ہوسکتے ہیں۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ تشدد کی اطلاع دی جانی چاہئے اور زیادتی کرنے والوں کو اجاگر کیا جانا چاہئے تاکہ وہ اس شرمناک حرکت پر شرمندہ ہوں۔ انہوں نے شعبہ صنفی مطالعہ کے فیکلٹی ممبران انصار عباس، حسنات احمد، ڈاکٹر شہزاد محمود اور سبطین یاسر کی کاوشوں کو سراہا۔ انصر عباس، اسسٹنٹ پروفیسر شعبہ جینڈر اسٹڈیز نے صنفی بنیادوں پر تشدد کے خلاف ان 16 دنوں کی سرگرمی کی اہمیت اور موضوع کو اجاگر کرتے ہوئے مختلف سرگرمیوں کا اشتراک کیا جس میں صنفی بنیادوں پر تشدد کے خلاف آگاہی واک اور آگاہی مہم شامل ہے۔ پروفیسر ڈاکٹر یاسمین روفی نے اپنے خطاب میں کہا کہ صنفی بنیاد پر تشدد عالمی سطح پر خاص طور پر ہمارے معاشرے میں ایک سنگین مسئلہ ہے۔ یہ صرف جسمانی تشدد ہی نہیں ہے بلکہ اس کے بہت سے ورژن ہیں جیسے سماجی، نفسیاتی اور ذہنی تشدد۔ معاشرے کو صنفی بنیاد پر تشدد کے بارے میں حساس بنا کر اسے ختم کیا جا سکتا ہے۔ اس موقع پر ڈیپارٹمنٹ آف جنیڈر اسٹڈیز اور پولیٹیکل سائنس کے طلباء وطالبات کی بڑی تعداد شریک تھی۔
