International Workshop on "Droughts over Pakistan in the Changing Climate" at the Islamia University of Bahawalpur

Bahawalpur () International Center for Climate Change, Food Security and Sustainability the Islamia University of Bahawalpur organized an international workshop on drought over Pakistan in the changing climate. Commissioner Bahawalpur Division Dr. Ehtisham Anwar was the chief guest of the inaugural session of this two-day workshop. The workshop was presided over by Director Students Affairs, Director Institute of Chemistry Prof. Dr. Abdul Rauf. The two-day workshop is being organized in collaboration with National Drought Monitoring and Early Warning Center Islamabad, Pakistan Meteorological Department Islamabad. Commissioner Bahawalpur Dr. Ehtisham Anwar said in his address that climate change is a national and global problem. South Punjab is also facing the challenges of climate change like other parts of the country. In the year 2022, South Punjab faced the worst floods due to climate change and last year too there was a flood in the rivers flowing here after a long time. In this regard, general information, especially in the curriculum of schools, realizing the need for awareness of climate change, Green Book was edited. This book is included in the curriculum of schools in South Punjab and children as well as teachers and elders are benefiting from it. Commissioner Bahawalpur appreciated the formation of consortium of national universities and cooperation with national and international institutions regarding climate change in the Islamia University of Bahawalpur. Prof. Dr. Abdul Rauf, Director of Students Affairs and Director of Institute of Chemistry said that climate change has greatly affected the social and economic structure of Pakistan. The public and private sector have to take measures to deal with water scarcity and drought. There is a need to improve the irrigation system especially to save canal water and save it from wastage. Director General Pakistan Meteorological Department Islamabad Mahar Sahibzad Khan said that this national center was established in the year 2005 to compile data on scientific basis related to drought, in the light of which the government and other institutions can formulate short and long term policy so that the climate Agricultural, social and economic policies can be formulated to cope with the changes. Focal person of the workshop, Director International Center for Climate Change, Food Security and Sustainability Prof. Dr. Wajid Naseem Jatoi said that the aim of the workshop is to bring together academia, agriculture and climate experts to bring together stakeholders on one platform to address the threat posed by drought. The workshop participants will discuss climate data analysis, use of geographic information technology, advanced warning systems and policy formulation.

بہاول پور () انٹرنیشنل سنٹر فار کلائمیٹ چینج، فوڈ سیکورٹی اینڈ سسٹین ایبلیٹی اسلامیہ یونیورسٹی بہاول پورکے زیر اہتمام پاکستان میں موسمیاتی تبدیلی کے تناظر میں خشک سالی کے موضوع پر بین الاقوامی ورکشاپ کا آغاز ہو گیا۔ اس دو روزہ ورکشاپ کے افتتاحی سیشن کے مہمان خصوصی کمشنر بہاول پور ڈویژن ڈاکٹر احتشام انور تھے۔ ورکشاپ کی صدارت ڈائریکٹر سٹوڈنٹس افیئر ز، ڈائریکٹر انسٹی ٹیو ٹ آف کیمسٹری پروفیسر ڈاکٹر عبدالرؤف نے کی۔ دو روزہ ورکشاپ کا انعقاد نیشنل ڈروٹ مانیٹرینگ اینڈ ارلی ورننگ سنٹر اسلام آباد، پاکستان میٹرولوجیکل ڈیپارٹمنٹ اسلام آباد کے تعاون سے کیا جا رہا ہے۔ کمشنر بہاول پور ڈاکٹر احتشام انور نے اپنے خطاب میں کہا کہ موسمیاتی تبدیلی قومی اور عالمی مسئلہ ہے۔ جنوبی پنجاب کو بھی ملک کے دیگر حصوں کی طرح موسمیاتی تبدیلیوں کے چیلنجز کا سامنا ہے۔ سال 2022میں جنوبی پنجاب نے موسمیاتی تبدیلیوں کے باعث بدترین سیلاب کا سامنا کیا اور گزشتہ برس بھی یہاں بہنے والے ندی نالوں میں طویل عرصے بعدطغیانی آئی۔ اس حوالے سے عمومی معلومات خاص طورپر سکولوں کے نصاب میں کلائمیٹ چینج سے آگاہی کی ضرورت کو محسوس کرتے ہوئے سبز کتاب تدوین کی گئی۔ یہ کتاب جنوبی پنجاب کے سکولوں کے نصاب میں شامل ہے اور بچوں کے ساتھ ساتھ اساتذہ اور بڑے بھی اس سے مستفید ہو رہے ہیں۔ کمشنر بہاول پور نے اسلامیہ یونیورسٹی بہاول پور میں موسمیاتی تبدیلی کے حوالے سے ملکی جامعات کے کنسورشیم کی تشکیل اور ملکی اور بین الاقوامی اداروں سے اشتراک کو سراہا۔ پروفیسر ڈاکٹر عبدالرؤف ڈائریکٹر اسٹوڈنٹس افیئرز اور ڈائریکٹر انسٹیٹیوٹ آف کیمسٹری نے کہا کہ موسمیاتی تبدیلیوں نے پاکستان کے سماجی اور معاشی ڈھانچے کو بہت متاثر کیا ہے۔ سرکاری اور نجی شعبے کو پانی کی کمیابی اور خشک سالی سے نمٹنے کے لیے اقدامات کرنے ہوں گے۔ خصوصا نہری پانی کی بچت اور ضائع ہونے سے بچانے کے لیے آبپاشی نظام کو بہتر کرنے کی ضرورت ہے۔ ڈائریکٹر جنرل پاکستان میٹرولوجیکل ڈیپارٹمنٹ اسلام آباد مہر صاحبزاد خان نے کہا کہ یہ قومی مرکز سال 2005میں قائم ہوا تاکہ خشک سالی سے متعلق سائنسی بنیادوں پر اعدادو شمار مرتب کیے جائیں جن کی روشنی میں حکومتی اور دیگر ادارے قلیل اور طویل مدتی پالیسی ترتیب دیں تاکہ موسمیاتی تبدیلیوں کے باعث درپیش زرعی، سماجی اور معاشی پالیسیوں کو تشکیل دیا جا سکے۔ ورکشاپ کے فوکل پرسن ڈائریکٹر انٹرنیشنل سنٹر فار کلائمیٹ چینج، فوڈ سیکورٹی اینڈ سسٹین ایبلیٹی پروفیسرڈاکٹر واجد نسیم جتوئی نے کہا کہ اس ورکشاپ کا مقصد اکیڈمیا، زرعی اور موسمیاتی ماہرین کو اکٹھا کرنا ہے تاکہ خشک سالی جیسے درپیش خطرے سے نمٹنے کے لیے اسٹیک ہولڈر کو ایک پلیٹ فارم پر جمع کیا جا سکے۔ ورکشاپ کے شرکاء موسمیاتی اعداو شمار کے تجزیے، جغرافیائی انفارمیشن ٹیکنالوجی کے استعمال، ایڈونسڈ وارننگ سسٹم اور اس حوالے سے پالیسی مرتب کرنے کے لیے تبادلہ خیال کریں گے۔
