School of State Sciences, the Department of Political Science organized a Panel Discussion on Democracy, Electoral Process and Political Parties in Pakistan in the Faculty of Arts Auditorium, The Islamia University of Bahawalpur. Prof. Dr. Fouzia Ghani, Chairperson, Department of Political Science Government College University of Lahore, Dr Ghulam Mustafa, Associate Professor, Chairman Department of International Relations, Government College University of Faisalabad, Dr Muhammad Azhar, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science Government College University of Faisalabad, Dr. Muhammad Nawaz Bhatti from Department of Politics, Government Ambala Muslim Graduate College, Sargodha and Prof. Dr. Syed Mussawar Hussain Bukhari Chairman Department of Political Science, The Islamia University of Bahawalpur graced this event as Panelists. The faculty members and Students from the Department of Political Science and Gender Studies participated in this event actively. The Panel discussion was started by Dr Safdar Hussain, Associate Professor Department of Political Science, The Islamia University of Bahawalpur as Moderator of this session followed by the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran and Naatia Kalam by the students of the Department of Political Science. The panel discussion centered on the key aspects of democracy, the electoral process, and the role of political parties in Pakistan. The diverse perspectives of the panelists shed light on the current state of democratic practices in the country. Panelists highlighted the evolution of democracy in Pakistan, acknowledging both successes and challenges. They emphasized the importance of civic participation, free speech, and the rule of law as foundational pillars for a thriving democratic system. Discussions delved into the effectiveness and fairness of the electoral process. Concerns were raised about electoral transparency, voter education, and the need for continuous improvements to ensure a more inclusive and representative electoral system. The role of political parties in shaping the democratic landscape was a focal point. Panelists debated the influence of major parties, coalition dynamics, and the need for internal party democracy. Questions were raised about party accountability and their commitment to addressing citizens' concerns. The panel acknowledged challenges such as corruption, electoral fraud, and issues related to the accountability of elected officials. However, participants also highlighted opportunities for positive change, including the potential for civic engagement, technological advancements in the electoral process, and the importance of youth participation. Panelists proposed recommendations to enhance the democratic process in Pakistan, including electoral reforms, increased transparency, and efforts to strengthen the role of independent institutions.
