One-day international seminar "Constructing the Past through Material Culture".

The Department of Anthropology the Islamia University of Bahawalpur organized a one-day international seminar "Constructing the Past through Material Culture". Dr. Rebecca Robert and Afifah Khan, Department of Anthropology and Archeology, University of Cambridge, are the keynote speakers for this event. Prof. Dr. Rubina Bhatti, Dean Faculty of Social Sciences was the chief guest and Prof. Dr. Shazia Anjum, Director, Culture and Heritage Research Center was the guest of honor. Prof. Dr. Asif Naveed Ranjha, Chairman of Social Work Department, Prof. Dr. Samar Fahad, Department of Applied Psychology, Dr. Naeem Asim Head of Department of Public Health and Dr. Samia Head of Department of History also participated in the event. Speakers said, over the past century, significant urban expansion and widespread adoption of mechanized agriculture and irrigation systems in India and Pakistan have caused irreversible changes to the landscape. These changes, including the implementation of large-scale irrigation systems and the flattening of numerous archaeological settlements for various purposes such as cultivation and construction, have had lasting effects. A workflow has been developed using a variety of techniques and strategies to identify approximately 6000 archeological features across the region. This not only helps in understanding the distribution of settlements related to the Indus Civilization and subsequent cultural periods. Limited training data is being obtained for archival features and machine learning models. Historic maps serve as primary resources for historians and archaeologists, providing valuable information about past landscapes, settlement patterns, and geographic features. Dr. Farooq Ahmed, Chairman, Department of Anthropology, thanked all the guest speakers, faculty members, and students of the Department of Anthropology and Psychology for participating in the seminar. He stressed on the preservation of heritage for future generations which is important for the pride and identity of nations. He said that if the past and material culture is lost due to political, economic, environmental and other reasons, the future will also be lost. Professor Dr. Rubina Bhatti, Dean Faculty of Social Sciences explained the importance of history and civilizations. She concluded the discussion on the importance of anthropology and archeology in the conservation of antiquities. She congratulated Dr. Farooq Ahmed, Chairman, Department of Anthropology, for organizing a successful international seminar. Dr. Moazzam Durrani, Lecturer, Department of Anthropology, conducted the functions of organizing the event.

بہاول پور (پ) ڈیپارٹمنٹ آف انتھروپالوجی اسلامیہ یونیورسٹی بہاول پور کے زیر اہتمام ''ماضی کی تعمیر مادی ثقافت کے ذریعے'' کے موضوع پر ایک روزہ بین الاقوامی سیمینار کا انعقاد کیا گیا۔ ڈاکٹر ربیکا رابرٹ اور عفیفہ خان ڈیپارٹمنٹ آف انتھروپالوجی اور آثار قدیمہ یونیورسٹی آف کیمبرج اس تقریب کے کلیدی مقررین ھے۔ پروفیسر ڈاکٹر روبینہ بھٹی، ڈین فیکلٹی آف سوشل سائنسز مہمان خصوصی تھیں اور پروفیسر ڈاکٹر شازیہ انجم ڈائریکٹر کلچر اینڈ ہیریٹیج ریسرچ سنٹر مہمان اعزاز تھیں۔ پروفیسر ڈاکٹر آصف نوید رانجھا چیئرمین شعبہ سوشل ورک، پروفیسر ڈاکٹر ثمر فہد شعبہ اپلائیڈ سائیکالوجی، ڈاکٹر نعیم عاصم ہیڈ آف ڈیپارٹمنٹ آف پبلک ہیلتھ اور ڈاکٹر سمیعہ ہیڈ آف ڈیپارٹمنٹ آف ہسٹری نے بھی تقریب میں شرکت کی۔ مقررین نے کہا کہ گزشتہ صدی کے دوران، نمایاں شہری توسیع اور ہندوستان اور پاکستان میں مشینی زراعت اور آبپاشی کے نظام کو وسیع پیمانے پر اپنانے سے زمین کی تزئین میں ناقابل واپسی تبدیلیاں آئی ہیں۔ یہ تبدیلیاں، بشمول بڑے پیمانے پر آبپاشی کے نظام کا نفاذ اور مختلف مقاصد جیسے کہ کاشت کاری اور تعمیرات کے لیے متعدد آثار قدیمہ کی بستیوں کو ہموار کرنا سے دیرپا اثرات مرتب ہوئے ہیں۔ پورے خطے میں تقریباً 6000 آثار کی خصوصیات کا پتہ لگانے کے لیے مختلف تکنیکوں اور حکمت عملیوں کا استعمال کرتے ہوئے ایک ورک فلو تیار کیا گیا ہے۔ اس سے نہ صرف سندھ کی تہذیب اور اس کے بعد کے ثقافتی ادوار سے متعلق آباد کاری کی تقسیم کو سمجھنے میں مدد ملتی ہے۔ آثار قدیمہ کی خصوصیات اور مشین لرننگ ماڈلز کے لیے محدود تربیتی اعداد و شمار حاصل کئے جا رہے ہیں۔ تاریخی نقشے تاریخ دانوں اور آثار قدیمہ کے ماہرین کے لیے بنیادی وسائل کے طور پر کام کرتے ہیں، جو ماضی کے مناظر، آباد کاری کے نمونوں اور جغرافیائی خصوصیات کے بارے میں قیمتی معلومات پیش کرتے ہیں۔ ڈاکٹر فاروق احمد چیئرمین ڈیپارٹمنٹ آف انتھروپالوجی نے تمام مہمان مقررین، فیکلٹی ممبران، اور شعبہ بشریات اور نفسیات کے طلباء کا سیمینار میں شرکت پر شکریہ ادا کیا۔ انہوں نے آنے والی نسلوں کے لیے ورثے کے تحفظ پر زور دیا جو قوموں کے فخر اور شناخت کے لیے اہم ہے۔ ان کا کہنا تھا کہ اگر ماضی اور مادی ثقافت سیاسی، اقتصادی، ماحولیاتی اور دیگر وجوہات کی بناء پر ختم ہوجائے تو مستقبل بھی گم ہوجائے گا۔ پروفیسر ڈاکٹر روبینہ بھٹی ڈین آف سوشل سائنسز نے تاریخ اور تہذیبوں کی اہمیت بیان کی۔ انہوں نے اس بحث کا اختتام نوادرات کے تحفظ میں بشریات اور آثار قدیمہ کی اہمیت پر کیا۔ انہوں نے ڈاکٹر فاروق احمد چیئرمین شعبہ بشریات کو ایک کامیاب بین الاقوامی سیمینار کے انعقاد پر مبارکباد دی۔ ڈاکٹر معظم درانی لیکچرر شعبہ بشریات نے تقریب کی نظامت کے فرائض انجام دیئے۔
